The Regio Toilet is So Awesome, It Has Its Own Soundtrack Housewares]

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:17:00 PDT
Like most of the premium toilets made in Japan, the Regio has hidden cleaning sprays and a tankless design that utilizes a combination of water and air power for silent, earth-saving flushing. However, the aspects that make the Regio unique can be found in the luxurious extras. For example, it plays soft, relaxing jazz music when the lid is lifted. In fact, Jazz pianist Yoshiko Kishino contributed original pieces specifically for the Regio toilet soundtrack. Now that is a resume booster! Other

Mags: Madison's "married singles"

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:21:47 PDT
One of Madison’s strengths is identifying the social and relationship trends that affect middle-class, Gen X/Y Australian women and writing home about them (and coining clever new catch-phrases to describe them). This month, it’s the “together single” couple, a story that really resonates with me, being a recent-ish newlywed (almost a year!) and, by nature, fiercely independent and stubborn (not to mention a child of divorce – how does one know how to ‘do marriage’ without it being modeled to th

Shopping Online for a Designer Handbag

Fashionistas are constantly keeping up with the up-to-the-minute trends, especially having "owning" their own designer handbags, one, two, three, -- actually hundreds! If you’re a fashion admirer on a budget, it might be somewhat challenging to find handbags that you can afford. Here are some sites and stores you’ll want to investigate, as well

An Interview From The Casa of Lady G~

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:31:50 PDT
Lady G~'s daughter needs to interview a teacher for some coursework she's taking in education. She asked me for an interview, to which I am more than happy to respond. Here are my answers, dear one, and may they inspire you to teach as your heart sees fit. 1. How long have you been teaching? 24 years. 2. Why do you choose to be teacher? This has got to be a three part answer: 1. to touch children's lives in a positive way; 2. to instill in them a love of learning; 3. because I had such awful

Shift Happens — Now What?

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 18:50:48 PDT
You’ve just watched “Did You Know” or a keynote by David Warlick for the very first time. You feel your heart begin to race as panic sets in… you think: “My school is in no way prepared to help our students learn what they need for work and life in the this very different and constantly changing world… What should I do?!” Too often, the initial response is to look for money to buy more computers. Some educational leaders may say “Let’s make sure we have laptops in the hands of EVERY student!

Speaking at Sun Microsystem's Startup Camp

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 19:01:48 PDT
On May 4th and 5th I'll be attending, and speaking at, Sun Microsystem's Startup Camp 5 in San Francisco. The event is about 1/3 panels and 2/3 unconference (where the agenda is set on that day). I am really honored to be sitting on the "Notes From Mission Control: Rules For a Successful Media Launch" panel alongside S. Neil Vineberg, Jyri Engestrom (co-founder of Jaiku), Christina (CK) Kerley and Mark Modzelewski (CEO of Stealth Startup). Other panels on the 4th include the likes of Matt Mar

Gasoline usage heads down

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 19:06:58 PDT
kansascity.com By Steve Everly U.S. drivers are doing something they haven’t done for nearly two decades — consume less gasoline. Gas consumption so far this year is down about 0.2 percent compared to last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. The federal agency is predicting that gasoline demand will be down 0.4 percent this summer and 0.3 percent for the year. That may not sound like much, but it would be the first time since 1991 that there’s been a decline in annual

Britain’s biggest banks use astrology to play the markets

Tue, 22 Apr 2008 19:12:54 PDT
Christeen is one of a growing, albeit secretive, network of astrologers who work for seemingly conservative British institutions such as high street banks, City investment funds and retailers. Desperate to avoid financial meltdown in the ongoing ‘credit crunch’ and to spot fashions and consumer trends before they start

The notion of “friendship” has been transformed through social networking. The Washington Post has a good piece looking at how MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and others are forcing us to think afresh about the boundaries and intensities of these new online relationships. Never before in history has it been so easy to keep up with so many people with whom you otherwise would have lost contact. These new electronic meshes are more than mere improvements over alumni magazines, holiday cards with pictur

A Viewer Speaks

WE GET A good group of commenters here in Sticksville. Lately, we've been hearing quite a bit from a young woman from the Prairies, who has an openminded attitude toward Canadian shows, and an engaged and passionate way of defending them. On the subject of all the changes going on at the CBC, I think she's expressed the necessary corrective point of view better than Richard Stursberg, Kirstine Leyfield, or anybody else at the public broadcaster has managed to do. So I'm bumping her comment here

CBC to boost newsgathering in Alberta, but drops Calgary Newsworld programming

Thu, 03 Apr 2008 12:39:49 PDT
The CBC will dramatically increase resources devoted to covering local and national news in Alberta generally and Calgary and Edmonton in particular. Saying it’s moving to fulfill a commitment to local newsgathering announced nationally last year, CBC News will be doubling the number of newsgathering resources in Alberta by adding approximately 25 new assignments for television journalists based in Calgary and Edmonton to focus on local and national stories originating in Alberta. At the same

Mon, 07 Apr 2008 10:59:10 PDT
Ten new CBC News jobs in Calgary were posted this morning. A news junkie’s dream …. or nightmare

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 10:46:47 PDT
I am a news junkie and admittedly if I had cable plus the extra TV I would probably have either CNN or CBC Newsworld on the whole time I’m in my room I jokingly call my office. So when I saw Brian Solis’ post about local broadcast news going social I was at first rather skeptical of the the idea; after all everything these days is having the social sticker slapped on its ass like it is going to be the road to instant riches or something. But when I clicked on the LiveNewsComeras.com link (go

Instead of dealing with the serious issue at hand, alleged election overspending, the Con's are as usual pointing fingers at the Lib's and anyone else they can think of as a diversion. One of their favourite attack dogs, Pierre Poilievre apparently sees a conspiracy here. Ottawa-area Conservative Pierre Poilievre (PWAH'-lee-ehv) goes further, accusing Elections Canada of inviting the Liberal party to watch the raid unfold. Note to Petey. The Lib's have said that they saw the story on Newsworl

Cons: RCMP Raid Was a 'Publicity Stunt'

Wed, 16 Apr 2008 13:10:43 PDT
Pass the tissues. Oh how I weep for those poor victims of the RCMP raid of the Cons' headquarters. Not. The tories are scrambling to paint themselves as being oppressed after yesterday's raid (which continues today). The problem is that they appointed the two Elections Canada officials they're now suing and that they applaud the RCMP (even protecting Zaccardelli to the bitter end) except when they're the targets of a legally-sanctioned warrant. And now, they're also trying to implicate the Li
